SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

In a Wall Street Journal article on parents of new college students letting go, Colleen O’Connor Bench, director of Syracuse University’s Parents Office, comments on the need for parents to step back in order to help students transition from high school to college.

The Albany Times Union reported on SU being among the first schools nationally to use a “Financial Aid Shopping Sheet,” a standardized form that would allow prospective students to make clear tuition cost comparisons. CNN Money also reported.

KNOW-FM in Minneapolis, Minn. reported on the participation of Maxwell School Dean James Steinberg as a panelist at the Aspen Ideas Festival, discussing the direction of America’s diplomatic and defense strategy.

The Cold Case Justice Initiative is mentioned in a Clarion Ledger (Jackson, Miss.) story on the unsolved Clifton Walker civil rights slaying case.

SU’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is featured in a Denver Post story on immigration court backlogs in Colorado.

Sean Kirst’s Post-Standard column mentions the work of Jongwoo Han, principal of the Central New York Korean School and adjunct faculty member at the Maxwell School, to create a website — the Korean War Veterans Digital Memorial — that honors American servicemen and women who helped South Korea gain its liberty.

The Post-Standard reported on plans for recent SU graduate and Commencement speaker Stephen Barton to resume his cross-country bike trip, following his injury in the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. The Poughkeepsie Journal also reported on his recovery.

Syracuse.com reported on The Citizens Academy accepting applications for the 35 spots open in the free classes. Citizens Academy was created and is administered by FOCUS Greater Syracuse and University College.

The Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion is mentioned in the Post-Standard in a piece about St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center beginning a Meatless Monday campaign.

FACULTY QUOTES

Don Mitchell, Maxwell Distinguished Professor of Geography in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a National Public Radio story on the I-81 Challenge and the debate about what to do with the raised stretch of I-81 that cuts through the city, creating a psychological and physical barrier between the city and the University.

Collin Gifford Brooke, associate professor of rhetoric and writing in The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education story on digital humanities.

Rick Burton, Falk Professor of Sport Management in the Falk College, authored a column in Advertising Age comparing advertising in the Olympics versus the Super Bowl.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in USA Today on the influence of the Sunday morning news shows.

Tracy Tillipaugh, career consultant at SU’s Career Center, authored a Syracuse.com blog post on things to omit from a resume.

Margaret Thompson, associate professor of history in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, spoke about the local 24th District Congressional race with 9WSYR-TV.
