SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

A Forbes feature and a Central New York Business Journal article reported on the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program held at Syracuse University this past weekend. The EBV was founded at the Whitman School of Management in 2007 and is operated under the auspices of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF).

The Kern Valley Sun (Lake Isabella, Calif.) reported on the launch of Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup, a program to help transitioning service members and veterans become entrepreneurs. The pilot program was launched by the IVMF, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the U.S Marine Corps on four USMC bases. It goes nationwide in 2013.

A Back Stage article on the Araca Project features young alumni of SU producing their work off- Broadway. The Araca Project is a new initiative between the Department of Drama in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) and the Araca Group that fosters emerging theater artists’ entrepreneurial spirit.

Syracuse.com reported on the Whitman School of Management’s Student Entrepreneurial Experience sessions at the South Side Innovation Center (SSIC). Margaret Butler, SSIC facilities coordinator, is quoted.

FACULTY QUOTES

Gareth Fisher, assistant professor of religion in The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a Daily Beast story on Shi Yongxin, the lead monk behind growth of the Shaolin brand.

Thomas Keck, the Michael O. Sawyer chair of Constitutional Law and Politics and chair of the Department of Political Science at the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Agence France Presse article about possible U.S. Supreme Court consideration of appeals challenging the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Leonard Burman, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs at the Maxwell School, is quoted in in a Washington Post article on House Republicans and tax reform.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, commented in a San Francisco KCBS radio report (listen to clip) about TV viewership ratings for the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics. He is also quoted in a CNN story on how competing networks plan programming counter to the Olympics.

David M. Crane L’80, professor of practice in the College of Law, authored a column for Jurist on the U.S. Congress and rule of law, relative to posthumous prosecution of former Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky

Allan Mazur, professor of public affairs in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Santa Rosa Press Democrat story on Olympics testosterone standards for female competitors.

A Newsday (registration required) story on New York State Senate majority leader Dean Skelos and bipartisanship quotes Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences.

Kendall Phillips, associate dean of research and graduate studies in VPA, talked with the WCNY Insight program about “Gasland” and “Truthland,” two documentaries with opposite points of view.

College of Arts and Sciences physicists Simon Catterall and Steven Blusk are featured in a Sunday Post-Standard story explaining the Higgs boson discovery.
