SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Post-Standard’s Green Central New York magazine features a question-and-answer profile of Sherburne Abbott, vice president for sustainability initiatives and University Professor of Sustainability Science and Policy at Syracuse University. A related sidebar with the article previews SU Showcase 2012 on campus and at the Syracuse Center of Excellence (SyracuseCoE) April 18 and 19.

The Associated Press previewed a lecture by David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, at the USC School of Law on the Columbia campus.

The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin previewed NanoDay events at Binghamton University, one of which will feature Matthew Maye, assistant professor of chemistry in The College of Arts and Sciences, discussing ways in which nanotechnology is revolutionizing research and development in medicine, computing, new materials, food, energy and other areas.

A report by WRVO Public Media on the SyracuseCoE discusses efforts by Bruce Kingma, SU associate provost for entrepreneurship and innovation, to start a green entrepreneurship program with SyracuseCoE. The report also looks at physical aspects of the headquarters building with a focus on energy and environmental systems. Kingma and Ed Bogucz, executive director of SyracuseCoE and associate professor in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, are quoted.

The Central New York Business Journal reported on the upcoming “Emerging Talk” event to be held March 29 and 30. The student-run entrepreneurship conference, with two seed-funding
competitions this year, brings together students, entrepreneurs and investors.

The Post-Standard reported on Seymour elementary school students shadowing SU students for a day on campus. The story also noted SU students will visit Westside Academy at Blodgett for a day in eighth grade April 3.

Several photos of SU students on the Kenneth A. Shaw Quad and around campus accompanied a Post-Standard story about the close of a very mild winter season.

The Post-Standard reported on the La Casita Cultural Center exhibiting work of students from the Westside Academy at Blodgett.

The Post-Standard highlighted the Aziz Ansari performance in Syracuse on Friday, April 13.

FACULTY QUOTES

The Albany Times Union published an op-ed by Jerry Evensky, Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and professor of economics at the Maxwell School, on teacher evaluation in New York state and the need to capture the full value that teaching professionals bring to the classroom.

For the Wall Street Journal section “Big Issues: Small Business,” John Torrens, assistant professor of entrepreneurial practice in the Whitman School of Management, contributed an opinion piece for the debate about whether equity-based crowd funding should be made legal.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article on President Obama’s joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron during halftime of the NCAA tournament game in Ohio. Thompson is also quoted in a New York Daily News story and in WTAM1100 (Cleveland) about “Jersey Shore” returning to MTV for a sixth season and referenced in a Newser story on the same topic.

Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech at the Newhouse School, discussed Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests for an Eagle Newspapers Sunshine Week article on FOIL usage in Syracuse and surrounding areas.
