Chancellor Nancy Cantor and Luvenia W. Cowart, associate professor of practice in the Department of Public Health, Food Studies and Nutrition in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, are among the 2012 Post-Standard Achievement Award winners reported in Sunday’s Post-Standard.

The documentary film “Where Are You Taking Me?” by Kimi Takesue, assistant professor in transmedia studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), was reviewed in the Christian Science Monitor.

An Associated Press article about federal sentencing disparities used analysis by Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). The piece also reported on a new interactive TRAC tool for analyzing individual judges’ sentencing and processing time records. Also, an AP explanation of methodology was provided. TRAC is also mentioned in a Huffington Post story examining various statistics on the number of immigrant deportations.

Convenience Store Decisions mentions the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) in an article about the PepsiCo Dream Machines recycling initiative being implemented at select Jiffy Mart store locations across the country. Proceeds benefit the EBV program, founded at the SU Whitman School of Management and operated by SU’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF).

The Post-Standard reported on Saturday’s Say Yes to Education Day at the Dome and the announcements of several gifts to the program. Say Yes Day at the Dome annually celebrates the commitment of its supporters to citywide education transformation for more than 20,000 students in the Syracuse City School District.

Research by William Duncombe and John Yinger, professors of public administration in the Maxwell School, is cited in a Post-Standard article on school districts resisting
consolidation.

The $30,444 donation from the SU Sport Management Club to the the Upstate Cancer Center at Upstate Medical University was noted in the Post-Standard.

A Newhouse School presentation on etiquette for business meals was featured in the Sunday Post-Standard.

The recent passing of Benjamin P. Burtt Sr., professor emeritus in chemistry in The College of Arts and Sciences, was noted in a Post-Standard report.

The Post-Standard reported that Jane Monheit will be the featured performer at the primary 2012 fundraiser for Syracuse Stage.

The Post-Standard reported on the Little Free Library seeking book donations. The Little Free Libraries project is a collaboration among VPA, the School of Information Studies (iSchool), the Office of Community Engagement and Economic Development and the Near Westside Initiative.

The Post-Standard Stars magazine reviewed the Syracuse Stage presentation of “Red.”

FACULTY QUOTES

A Reuters column on corporate taxes and middle class workers by David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, is cited in a New York Times blog posting by Paul Krugman on Mitt Romney’s taxes.

Retired U.S. Army Capt. Shannon Meehan, media relations and communications specialist for IVMF, authored an op-ed in the New York Daily News on the  controversy surrounding holding a parade for veterans in New York City and how our nation can honor vets’ sacrifices instead by being honest about their complexity. Meehan is a 2011 graduate of SU’s EBV.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in two Christian Science Monitor articles, on the trend toward bias-free news coverage by media outlets and on the passing of the Monkees’ Davy Jones. Thompson is also quoted in the New York Daily News on the cultural phenomenon of the “Hunger Games” trilogy; by CNN on the 500th episode of “The Simpsons;” and in NPR and WINS-AM (New York City) reports (listen to clips) on Rush Limbaugh’s comments and apology regarding Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke.

Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech at the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Washington Post story on the launch of Honest Appalachia, a website for anonymous rural whistleblowers.

Jeremy Blumenthal, associate professor at the College of Law, is quoted in a WSYR report on false confessions and the recent push for requiring DNA samples from all convicted criminals in New York State.

Kristi Andersen, Chapple Family Professor of Citizenship and Democracy at the Maxwell School, authored a Sunday Post-Standard opinion piece on priorities for Onondaga County, ahead of Tuesday’s State of the County address by County Executive Joanie Mahoney.
