SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Associated Press, Los Angeles Times and the New York Times reported on the passing of Syracuse University alumnus Gil Cates Sr. ’55 G’65. A graduate of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Cates has produced the Academy Awards telecasts and served as president of the Directors Guild of America.

The Sacramento Bee (Calif.), SlashGear, The A to Z of Sensors and Post-Standard reported on the Kronos Quartet concert at SU featuring the Douglas Quin composition “Polar Suite” using a bluetooth sensor bow. The “Polar Suite” string quartet piece, composed for the new bow technology, combines traditional and captured sounds. Quin is a S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications associate professor, sound designer and music composer. Additionally, a Syracuse New Times feature on the concert discusses the concept of soundmen as electronic conductors.

Kate Brodock, executive director of digital and social media at SU, was interviewed by WebProNews about content curation on the web. Brodock is also quoted in “The Bottom Line” MSNBC blog about the appointment of Virginia Rometty as CEO of IBM. She also appeared on WebProNews.com speaking about resources and strategies in social media, from the BlogWorld Los Angeles conference.

A Christian Science Monitor story on the rise in felony prosecutions for immigration crimes cites TRAC statistics from SU’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC).

The American Forces Press Service featured an article on the upcoming Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans’ Families (EBV-F), which will take place the week of Nov. 13 at the Whitman School of Management during Military Family Appreciation Month. Tina Kapral, director of education programs at the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, which coordinates the program at SU, and Randy Blass, director of the EBV-F at The Florida State University, which hosts its inaugural program in February, were quoted. In addition, the article references the EBV National Consortium, of which SU serves as national host.

Syracuse.com reported on Syracuse Stage plans for participation in simultaneous performances of “Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays” in November. Forty theaters and universities plan presentations of the play.

FACULTY QUOTES

The Associated Press quotes Mehrzad Boroujerdi, director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program in the Maxwell School and The College of Arts and Sciences, in a report on internal political differences between Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Eric Kingson, professor in the Falk College’s School of Social Work, co-authored a Huffington Post commentary on keeping Social Security benefits intact and is quoted in an ABC News report on potential consequences of inaction by the “super committee” on federal deficit reduction. Also, Kingson was interviewed on the WPKN (Bridgeport, Conn.) “Counterpoint” program, and the Madison County Courier briefly previewed Kingson’s upcoming presentation to the Cazenovia Forum on the economics, ethics and politics of Social Security reform.

The Miami Herald quotes Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, in a story about a rate dispute between DirecTV and Fox. Thompson is also quoted in an Associated Press story on E! Entertainment’s rerun of the Kardashian wedding and in a Star-Telegram (Fort Worth, Texas) article on Pottermore, the Harry Potter-themed website. Thompson also spoke with 9WSYR about celebrity marriages.

John Torrens, assistant professor of entrepreneurial practice in the Whitman School, was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article on small-business owners awaiting an opportunity to sell stakes in their businesses through social networking, a process known as crowd funding.

A Contra Costa Times (California) story about bias in rental housing quotes John Yinger, Trustee Professor of Economics and Public Administration at the Maxwell School.

William Ward, professor of practice in the Newhouse School, is quoted in Marketing Vox and Tech News World stories on Google+ and LinkedIn’s professional user base.

Leonard Burman, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs at the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Albany Times Union story on flat tax rhetoric.

Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech at the Newhouse School, commented for a Schenectady Daily Gazette (subscription required) story about the Skidmore College student newspaper ceasing its print edition and going online only.

Thomas Dennison, professor of practice in public administration in the Maxwell School, is quoted an Observer-Dispatch (Utica, N.Y.) article on cutbacks in Oneida County’s public health department.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a 9WSYR (watch clip) report on local political races with incumbents running unopposed.

Bethaida “Bea” Gonzalez, dean of University College, was quoted in a Post-Standard article about the need for diversity on the Syracuse City School District board. Gonzalez is a former school board member and former president of the Syracuse Common Council.

Milena Petrova, assistant professor of finance in the Whitman School, commented in a Post-Standard article on how the Syracuse-area real estate market is performing better than the national average.

Me’Shae Brooks-Rolling, senior operations manager in the Burton Blatt Institute, is quoted in a Post-Standard story about banking fees charged on debit cards and checking accounts.

Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Episcopalian chaplain at SU, authored a Saturday Post-Standard guest column about parallels between South Africa’s District Six and Syracuse’s 15 Ward.
