The security certificates for the AirOrangeX wireless network expire soon, and will be turned off on Oct. 31. New certificates have been available since August, and any client device which has run AirOrangeHelp since then should have had the new certificates installed. SU students, faculty and staff should ensure that new security certificates have been installed on their mobile devices, which will not get daily certificate expiration
reminders.
Security certificates provide a “handshake” that is used to initiate a device’s connection to the network and establishes the level of security for the connection. To complete the handshake, the device must have a current security certificate installed. As of late September, the devices of about 85 percent of all students and about 65 percent of all employees had installed the new certificates, but only installations on computers can be detected. Installations cannot be detected on handheld devices (tablets and smartphones, including Apple/iOS, Android and Blackberry), which means that the daily
certificate expiration warnings to install new certificates will not be sent to them, as they are to computers. Users will need to install new certificates on their devices in order to connect to the AirOrangeX wireless network after 10/31/11.
To install the new certificates, SU students, faculty and staff should connect their device to the AirOrangeHelp wireless network, point their browser to http://airorangehelp.syr.edu, and follow the directions.
Apple iOS devices, including iPhones, iPods (including touch) and iPads may experience problems, since Apple iOS uses two different profile techniques that are not compatible. It is best to remove all AirOrangeX profiles in Settings>General>Profiles, and then reset
network settings under Settings>General>Reset. Once the network settings are reset, connect to the AirOrangeHelp network, open http://airorangehelp.syr.edu on the browser, and follow the directions to run the AirOrangeHelp configuration tool. If that fails, see instructions on AirOrangeHelp.
