SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Maxwell School Dean James Steinberg was interviewed by the PBS NewsHour (view clip) about comments on recent events in Libya.

The October issue of Entrepreneur magazine highlighted the Whitman School of Management’s several entrepreneurial programs.

Data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC ) is cited in a Wall Street Journal story on criminal charges and property forfeiture claims against owners of drug-linked properties. Also, TRAC statistics on adjusted gross income per IRS tax return in Teton County are noted in a Jackson Hole Daily article on Occupy Jackson protests.

Reference to a Chronicle of Higher Education essay authored by Amy Leal, part-time English instructor in The College of Arts and Sciences, about her young son’s regression into autism appeared in a New York Times “Motherlode” blog post about parenting children with special needs.

The Daily Reflector (Greenville, N.C.) previewed an organ recital by Kola Owolabi, University organist and assistant professor in the Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), in the area’s Fisk on Fourth Recital Series by the East Carolina Musical Arts Foundation.

Men’s Fitness magazine includes SU in a compilation of the 25 most-fit colleges in America.

YNN reported on SU being part of the four educational and medical institutions in Syracuse teaming up to establish the Hill Collaboration on Environmental Medicine.

SU’s work with the QuarkNet teacher development program was highlighted in a Post-Standard story about two Central New York high school teachers working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, with the Large Hadron Collider project, under an SU High Energy Physics Group grant. College of Arts and Sciences professors Sheldon Stone and Steven Blusk are also mentioned.

The appointment of Joshua Dekaney as interim director of the Center for Live Music in the 21st Century in the Setnor School at VPA was reported by the Post-Standard.

The Syracuse Stage presentation of “The Boys Next Door” was reviewed by Syracuse.com.

Syracuse.com noted upcoming forums on public health organized by the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion at SU and the SU-Upstate Medical University CNY Master of Public Health program. The forums will are planned to assist the Onondaga County Health Department and local hospitals respond to health needs of the community.

The inaugural Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities National Conference was highlighted in a Central New York Business Journal article. EBV was founded in 2007 at the Whitman School.

Syracuse.com reported on films presented in the Syracuse area by Israeli filmmaker Dani Menkin, who is staying in Syracuse and teaching at SU as a Schusterman Visiting Artist, sponsored in part by VPA’s Department of Transmedia. Menkin will also work with SU’s Humanities Program in The College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education.

The Post-Standard reported on the WISE High Altitude Marketing program held by the WISE Women’s Business Center, an entrepreneurial project of the Whitman School.

The Post-Standard reported on a public service campaign against texting while driving that was created through Hill Communications, a public relations agency run by students in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The campaign features thumb bands inscribed with “PAUSE” and an online pledge.

FACULTY QUOTES

The Voice of America interviewed David M. Crane L’80, professor of practice in the College of Law, on the death of Moammar Gadhafi. An audio link is also available.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Denver Post story on the Oprah Winfrey Network and Rosie O’Donnell; a Newsday (subscription required) review of the season’s fashion-themed television programming; and in a San Jose Mercury News story about Mike Pereira, a former NFL referee who is now a Fox TV celebrity as resident expert on NFL rules.

Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management Rick in the Falk College, was quoted in the Oct. 19 edition of the iPad newspaper, The Daily, on Tiger Woods and his efforts to rebuild sponsorship deals.

EBV founder Mike Haynie, executive director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School, was quoted in an International Business Times article on a provision in President Obama’s jobs bill that would provide tax incentives for businesses that hire veterans and would establish a program to train veterans in the skills they need to re-integrate into the civilian workforce. Haynie was also interviewed for a CNY Central report on veteran unemployment.

The Associated Press and FOX News quoted Mehrzad Boroujerdi, director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program in the Maxwell School and The College of Arts and Sciences, on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s comments about eventually eliminating Iran’s highest elected office.

Maxwell School graduate student Daniel R. DePetris authored an op-ed in the CNN “Global Public Square” about American Special Forces troops in Uganda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic, assisting those governments against Lord’s Resistance Army insurgents.

Eric Kingson, professor in the Falk College’s School of Social Work, was interviewed via Skype for a WDBJ7.com (Roanoke, Va.) segment on the cost-of-living increase for Social Security recipients and quoted in a KETK (Tyler, Texas) report on the topic. Also, Kingson is mentioned in an On the Hill blog post about the impact of the recession on older Americans.

Amanda Nicholson, professor of retail practice in the Whitman School, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal on small businesses and holiday retail sales and in YNN on the resurgence of retail layaway programs.

Leonard Burman, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs at the Maxwell School, authored a Forbes commentary on the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and current tax reform plans. Burman is also quoted in a Washington Post “Wonkblog” entry on GOP candidate Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 tax reform plan.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Dallas Morning News article on plans presented by Obama and GOP candidates for increasing jobs and economic growth. Reeher is also quoted in a Post-Standard story on blurring political affiliations in a local political race in Lysander.

Mark Monmonier, distinguished professor of geography at the Maxwell School, authored a New Scientist op-ed on climate change, cartography and politics discussing misinterpreted weather data applied to a map of Greenland in the HarperCollins 2011 edition of the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World.

Brian Lonsway, associate professor in the School of Architecture, is quoted in a Metropolis magazine article on how architects create task-specific software programming workarounds to overcome limitations on existing software that supports the discipline’s professional processes.

Tracy Tillipaugh, career consultant at SU’s Career Center, authored Syracuse.com “Job Advice” blog post on guidelines for Halloween dress-up at work.
