The number of cases awaiting a resolution before the Immigration Courts reached a total of 285,526 at the end of July 2011. According to the very latest data obtained and analyzed by Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), that total represents a new all-time high, up 3.7 percent from just three months ago. Wait times also rose.
Only 8.3 percent of the pending cases involved a charge of engaging in criminal activities, actions adverse to national security or aiding terrorism—a fraction which has fallen during the last 10 months. Those charged with violating immigration rules made up 90 percent of all cases, and their numbers rose sharply.
