The official White House blog, Chicago Sun-Times, Washington Post, New York Daily News, Dallas Morning News, Stars & Stripes, Time Magazine and 9WSYR reported that 2007 Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) graduate John Raftery was a guest of first lady Michelle Obama during President Barack Obama’s Joint Address to Congress on America’s jobs and economy.

The Warehouse Gallery exhibition “Colorfornia: New Forms in West Coast Street Art: Apex, Chor Boogie and Jet Martinez” is featured in Art Knowledge News.

The Sept./Oct. 2011 issue of BizEd magazine mentions the Whitman School of Management’s launch of the new one-year Whitman Advantage Program which allows individuals with undergraduate degrees to earn master’s in finance, accounting and business administration. Also, the Whitman School’s South Side Innovation Center is featured in a Central New York Business Journal article about training low income entrepreneurs through a grant funded under the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Program for Investment in Microentrepreneurs Act (PRIME). The PRIME grant was also reported in a CNY Business Minute segment on WCNY-TV.

Sculptor Sam Van Aken, associate professor of sculpture in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, is the focus of a Post-Standard feature on his commemoration of 9/11, expressed by creating a literal orchard of grafted trees that will bear 40 different fruit.

Syracuse University is mentioned in a Money Magazine article for its programs that help make community college transferring more seamless, including combining predictive financial aid modeling with academic advising for community college students.

College and Research Libraries News mentions that Megan Oakleaf, assistant professor in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), was a panelist at the American Library Association’s 130th annual conference in New Orleans. Oakleaf’s panel was “Demonstrating the Value of the Library: Assessment Tools and Techniques.”

The Central New York Business Journal and Physorg.com reported on the patent awarded to researchers in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science for a “method and system of controlling airfoil actuators,” which can lead to greater maneuverability options for wing design on airplanes and is being considered for applications to wind turbine research.

“Bridge Street” on 9WSYR spoke with Professional Football Hall of Famer Floyd Little ’67 about the SU football program, as special assistant to the athletics director, former student-athlete and alumnus.

A Monday Post-Standard story on area memorials of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 noted remarks by William Smullen, director of the National Security Studies program in the Maxwell School, at the DeWitt Town Hall remembrance ceremony.

A Post-Standard article on recent, current and anticipated development in the University area makes note of construction and renovation at the SyracuseCoE, Connective Corridor, Syracuse Stage, Lawrinson Hall on the SU campus, new SU College of Law academic building and residences, and the Sheraton University Inn.

Syracuse.com noted the joint book-signing by SU alumni authors to be held campus Sept. 23, as part of the CBT X African American and Latino Alumni Reunion and Conference.

The Post-Standard Stars magazine previewed the first presentation in the Raymond Carver Reading Series, the appearance of SU alumnus and fiction writer Rahul Mehta.

FACULTY QUOTES

Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the Falk College, was quoted in an Associated Press article September 9 about the start of the NFL season and its impact on the U.S. economy.

Eric Kingson, professor in the Falk College’s School of Social Work, jointly authored a letter to the editor in the September 10 New York Times on Texas governor Rick Perry’s comments on Social Security. Additionally, he co-authored a post in the Huffington Post on the importance of Social Security in the aftermath of 9/11. Kingson is also referenced in the Los Angeles Times “Opinion L.A.” blog on Social Security benefits in the future.

Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School, is featured in a Wall Street Journal blog on the payroll tax cut for employers as part of President Obama’s jobs-creation bill. He also offered his thoughts on the President’s speech in Forbes.com and hosted a Washington Post “Conversations” question-and-answer blog about whether capital gains taxes help or hurt the nation’s economy. Burman’s comments are cited in The Atlantic, in an article expanding on the Washington Post piece.

A letter on the debate over jobs creation versus costs of environmental regulations by David Driesen, University Professor in the College of Law, was published in the New York Times (third item).

Women’s’ Wear Daily quotes Aileen Gallagher, assistant professor of multiplatform journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, on magazines as brands.

School of Architecture Dean Mark Robbins is quoted in a Fast Company story on the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and its new director, Bill Moggridge.

The Press of Atlantic City quotes Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, in an article on steel from World Trade Center becoming a part of many 9/11 memorials and quotes him in a McClatchy News article on how pop culture helps people cope with earth-shattering events such as 9/11. Thompson is also quoted in a BBC (watch clip) segment on Doris Day releasing “My Heart” album at age 87; in the Christian Science Monitor on reality TV dominating the fall television lineup, and on The Daily Climate website about Al Gore’s revised version of “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Gustav Niebuhr, associate professor of religion and media in The College of Arts and Sciences and Newhouse School, is quoted in a Religion News Service column on interfaith understanding in the United States. Niebuhr also wrote a Sunday Post-Standard op-ed on the civil responsibilities incumbent on citizens of democratic societies, following 9/11.

In further 9/11 anniversary coverage, Tiffany L. Steinwert, dean of Hendricks Chapel, contributed to an InterFaith Works of Central New York collection of reflections by area faith leaders on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, published in the Sunday Post-Standard, and Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Episcopalian chaplain at SU, contributed a personal reflection on surviving 9/11 and life after the attacks on the World Trade Center for Sunday’s Post-Standard. Baskerville-Burrows, pastor at Trinity Church in New York City’s financial district at the time of the attacks, now serves at both Hendricks Chapel and Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse.

The Wall Street Journal quotes Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s probe of executive pay at nonprofits.

Michael Barkun, professor emeritus at the Maxwell School, is quoted in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article (subscription required) questioning Georgia’s spending of Homeland Security state funds.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, is cited in a Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel PolitiFact report about Wisconsin-based S.C. Johnson, corporate taxes and loopholes.

David Rubin, professor and dean emeritus at the Newhouse School, authored a guest column in the Post-Standard which features a citizen’s guide to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s economic development plans for the state. SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor co-chairs the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties, one of 10 regions in the state vying for development funds. Ultimately, four regions will win preferred access to state development programs and funding.
