Best-selling author/philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah will deliver the keynote lecture of the 2011 Syracuse Symposium™ on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Syracuse Symposium™ is a semester-long exploration of the public humanities presented by the Syracuse University Humanities Center for The College of Arts and Sciences and the entire Syracuse community.“Identity” is the theme of this year’s symposium.
Appiah’s presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3, and is free and open to the public. Reduced-rate parking is available in the Irving Avenue parking garage. The event is co-sponsored by the Goldring Arts Journalism Program.
Appiah, the Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University, is the author of the landmark books “The Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen” and “Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers,” published by W.W. Norton & Co. in 2010 and 2006, respectively.
A distinguished professor in Princeton’s Department of Philosophy and University Center for Human Values, he has written extensively about philosophy of mind and language, African and African American intellectual history and political philosophy. He serves as president of the PEN American Center, the U.S. branch of the world’s oldest international literary and human rights organization.
In 2007, “Cosmopolitanism” won the Arthur Ross Book Award, the most significant prize given to a book on international affairs. In 2009, Appiah was featured in the documentary “Examined Life,” and was named one of Foreign Policy’s Top 100 public intellectuals.
