Environmental Health Office, Safety Department to merge

The Risk Management Department has announced that effective Sept. 1, Syracuse University’s Environmental Health Office and Safety Department will merge and operate as one service unit. The new name of the combined department is Environmental Health and Safety Services Office.

“The merger of the departments is being done to enhance customer service, efficiencies and effectiveness in the areas of program development, training, inspections, regulatory compliance and emergency response,” says David Pajak, director of Risk Management and chief emergency management officer. Both John Rossiter, safety manager, and James McCumber, director of environmental health, will continue to directly report to Pajak.  

The Environmental Health and Safety Services Office functions include: environmental compliance; industrial hygiene; occupational health; radiation safety; regulated waste management; life safety; vehicle safety; food sanitation; occupational safety, including ergonomics; emergency response; and related regulatory compliance training. 

The Environmental Health and Safety Services Office website is currently under construction, merging information from the EHO and Safety Department’s websites.
