SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Syracuse University College of Law is mentioned in a New York Daily News article about a federal ruling against the city’s plan to remove its fire alarm call box system. The injunction against dismantlement protects the rights of deaf and hearing-impaired populations reporting emergencies from the street.

The Aug./Sept. issue of CNY Business Exchange features articles on several of SU’s community members and programs. The issue includes:

  • a feature on the South Side Innovation Center (SSIC) quoting Bob Herz, SSIC director, and Margaret Butler, SSIC facilities coordinator, with case studies on several of the center’s clients;
  • a column by Mitch Franklin, assistant professor of accounting in the Whitman School of Management, on retirement strategies and individual retirement accounts;
  • a column by Kelly Lux, community and relationship manager for the School of Information Studies (iSchool), on topics for businesses to consider before using social media; and,
  • a guest essay by Tom Kruczek, former executive director of the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School, on small businesses rising in Syracuse and Central New York.

Today’s Dick Case column in the Post-Standard notes SUArt Galleries plans for “A Magnificent Obsession” exhibiting pieces from the collection of Hamilton Armstrong, quoting Domenic Iacono, director of SUArt Galleries.

The Post-Standard briefly reviewed the new paperback edition of “Get Off Your Knees: A Story of Faith, Courage and Determination,” recently released by SU Press. The book is an autobiography of S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications alumnus and SU Press author John Robinson.

FACULTY QUOTES

Tula Goenka, associate professor of television-radio-film at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, authored a New Delhi Television commentary about Bollywood and the recent release of “Aarakshan,” a film by Indian director Prakash Jha exploring controversial caste-based policies.

SU alumnus Rami Khouri ’70, G’98, director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut and editor-at-large of the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper, authored a Toronto Star op-ed on events in Syria; commented for a German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle segment on Saudi Arabian criticism of Syria; and is quoted in Daily Beast, Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) and Sunday Times (Sri Lanka) articles on Syrian violence and international pressure on the country.

An SU student who traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, working with a group of SU faculty, staff and students to install wireless equipment at the State University of Haiti, was interviewed by WSYR-AM.
