SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

SU and the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), founded at the Whitman School of Management, were featured in a White House announcement on President Barack Obama’s commitment to employing America’s veterans, which was reported on by the Associated Press, Louisville Courier-Journal, and Times-Picayune (New Orleans).  An event with the President took place Friday at the Washington Navy Yard.  Mike Haynie, founder and national executive director of the EBV, executive director of the University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Whitman School, and Ray Toenniessen, director of operations for the IVMF and director of veteran outreach programs at Whitman, were invited guests at the event, which also included an announcement by Humana of a $1 million contribution to the EBV.   

The Associated Press and Post-Standard reported on efforts by the Syracuse and Central New York community to bring a symphony back to area.  Chancellor Cantor; Ann Clarke, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts; and Jeffry Comanici, assistant dean for advancement in VPA, are mentioned in the stories.

The Tucson Sentinel reported on statistics from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) in an article on illegal re-entry becoming the most frequent federal criminal charge in the United States during the first six months of FY 2011.

Syracuse University is mentioned in a Post-Standard tribute, and Sean Kirst column, on the late New York State Governor Hugh Carey, and what he did to make the Carrier Dome a reality.

The Post-Standard and 9WSYR reported on the work of a group of SU faculty, staff and students that traveled to Port au Prince, Haiti, to install wireless equipment that SU is donating to the State University of Haiti.

A Sean Kirst Post-Standard column focused on the life of the late Don Seibert, a longtime fine arts librarian at E.S. Bird Library.  

The Post-Standard reported on DeWitt Canal Days and the special program, “The Engineering and Construction of the Erie Canal,” presented by Samuel Clemence, professor of civil and environmental engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science.

FACULTY QUOTES

Syracuse University Associate Law Professor Michael Schwartz is quoted in the Post-Standard on the case of an Americans with Disabilities Act complaint filed by a Rochester man. Schwartz is also director of the College’s Disability Rights Clinic.

Kelly Lux, community and relationship manager for the School of Information Studies (iSchool), contributed a column in the August-September issue of the CNY Business Exchange magazine. The  column, “Is Your Business Social Media Ready,” covers topics that businesses should consider before using social media.
