SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Sunday’s Post-Standard editorial praised the University’s efforts on Syracuse’s Near West Side, called for better physical connections between the Near West Side and downtown, put forward ideas for a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly West Street, and supported WCNY’s plans to move its headquarters to the former Case Supply warehouse.

A Texas Tribune (Austin, Texas) article on judges’ records for granting political asylum, also published in the New York Times, cites statistics from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Additionally, a Reuters roundup and El Paso Times (Texas) article on the topic also cite the TRAC data.

YNN reported on wrap-up of the week-long Girls Get It STEM Camp at SU.

FACULTY QUOTES

In a Washington Post article on the recent debt-ceiling compromise, Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, is quoted on the newly-created “super committee” whose 12 legislators are tasked with reducing the federal deficit by another $2.8 trillion.

The Houma Today (Terrebonne Parish, La.) quotes Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, in a story on the trend of “planking” and the Buffalo News quotes Thompson on the format of local programming in a business story about Buffalo station WNGS-TV converting to a new network affiliation with an emphasis on locally produced content.

Rising senior Natascha Trellinger in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science is quoted in a Pueblo Chieftain (Colorado) story on rocket launches in the area recently during the annual United Launch Alliance and Ball Aerospace Summer Intern Rocket Launch.

Kheli R. Willetts, assistant professor of African American Studies in The College of Arts and Sciences and executive director of Community Folk Art Center (CFAC), authored a guest column in the Post-Standard on the variety of festivals hosted by the Syracuse community. Also, a photo from the South Side Film Festival sponsored by the SU South Side Initiative accompanies a Post-Standard photo essay on summer festivals.
