More than 800 national and regional media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Detroit Free Press, San Francisco Chronicle, Bloomberg, and Syracuse Post-Standard remembered SU student-athlete John Mackey ’63, a Hall of Fame football player and founding president of the NFL Players Association, who passed away on Wednesday.

Business Insider mentions Newhouse School alumni as being among the sharpest and most prepared for professional careers in media.

Data from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) on disparities in ruling outcomes among disability judges is cited in a Baltimore City Papers report on Social Security disability cases. Also, TRAC statistics are referenced in a Las Vegas Sun story on growing immigration court caseloads in Nevada.

A Post-Standard report on the deadline extension for The Other New York: 2012 (TONY 2012), the Everson Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition of Upstate artists, notes XL Projects has joined the group of partner and venue sites which also includes other University-related organizations: the Community Folk Art Center, Light Work, Point of Contact, SUArt Galleries, the Urban Video Project and the Warehouse Gallery.

A Thursday briefing in the Post-Standard featured a photo of the new sculpture, “Rising,” by Dennis Earle, adjunct professor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, recently installed in Finnegan Park in the Hawley-Green neighborhood.

Ulf Oesterle, assistant professor of the Bandier Program in the Setnor School of Music, and his wife, Lauren Kochian, assistant development director at Syracuse Stage, are quoted in the Syracuse New Times for organizing a fundraiser for Steven Alexander, a local man who is suffering from kidney failure.

A Post-Standard blog highlights the musical talents of two SU staff member musicians: Jan Fletcher and Dave Robertson.

The Oregonian quotes George Theoharis, associate professor in teaching and leadership at the School of Education, in an article on a Portland, Ore. school district having a disproportionate ratio for suspending and expelling minorities in special education, based on a federal law the state began enforcing in 2008.

Megan Oakleaf, assistant professor in SU’s School of Information Studies (iSchool), is quoted in a Library Journal article about the Association of College and Research Libraries presentation on assessment tools for demonstrating the value of an academic library.
