SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Post-Standard, Auburn Citizen, WSYR-AM, 9WSYR, WAER and the Central New York Business Journal reported on the announcement of the Blue Highway transfer from Welch Allyn to a new research and development company affiliated with SU.

USA Today published an article by Jillian Anthony and Shayna Meliker, two members of the SU team participating in the Carnegie-Knight News21.com fellows program. The article highlights the new Census data and some dramatic changes in demographics, particularly about the growth in the Hispanic population in Reading, Pa. SU’s participation in the national Carnegie-Knight News21.com program is based at the Newhouse School of Public Communications; Newhouse is one of 12 schools participating in the program to create innovative journalism.

USA Today reported that Syracuse University is the second most influential university for use of social media, according to a list recently released. CNY Central also reported (watch clip).

Research on the formation of biofilms led by Anthony Garza, associate professor of biology in The College of Arts and Sciences, is featured onNSF 360 and covered in Medtech Pulse/Qmed and Bioscience Technology reports.

NSF 360 also reported on origin of vision research led by Kenneth Foster, professor of physics in The College of Arts and Sciences. Also, Foster’s research is featured in the news section of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) website. NIGMS is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Post-Standard reported on a School of Information Studies (iSchool) federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for training new science librarians. Dean Elizabeth Liddy is quoted in the article on institutional data management.

A Post-Standard report notes that Scott Nicholson, associate professor at the iSchool, will teach Foreign Service specialists how to create educational games at the Information Resource Officer Conference in Washington, D.C.

YNN (watch clip) reported on the Bristol-Myers Squibb annual Science Horizons summer camp, hosted through University College on the SU campus.

Second-year College of Law student Stephanie Woodward is quoted in a Rochester Democrat and Chronicle story on a new group of Rochester-area young professionals with disabilities.

A WSYR “Bridge Street” (watch clip) segment briefly mentions the XL Projects art exhibition in a story on summer attractions in the Central New York area.

FACULTY QUOTES

James Steinberg, incoming dean of the Maxwell School, appeared on the Charlie Rose Show recently to discuss his tenure as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, and joining the Maxwell School.

David M. Crane L’80, professor of practice in the College of Law, was interviewed for a Voice of America report about the arrest warrant issued against Muammar Gadhafi by the International Criminal Court. Crane was also interviewed for BBC TV‘s “The Hub” show and spoke on Public Radio International‘s “The World” with Lisa Mullins on the same topic.

Eric Kingson, professor in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, is quoted in an NPR news story on AARP and Social Security.

Vin Crosbie, senior consultant on executive education for new media and part time associate professor in media management at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a News & Tech article on the evolving market for customized news and information.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in The Republic (Columbus, Ind.) story on sports media and Twitter. He is also quoted in a McClatchy News Service on baby boomers’ music culture.
