SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The New York Times Sunday Book Review included a review of “Bob Dylan: Like a Complete Unknown” (Yale University Press, 2011), the new book by David Yaffe, assistant professor of English at The College of Arts and Sciences, among three new books on Dylan.

A recent “Bridge Street” program (view clip) on 9WSYR featured an interview with Syracuse University’s James S. Abbott, music technology administrator and instructor in the Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), and University Professor Peter Blanck, chairman of the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI). The program’s topic is the new summer course “Studio Recording/The Inclusive Recording Studio: Summer @SUbCat,” which will give SU students the opportunity to teach Syracuse high school students with disabilities about the art of music production and recording engineering in a professional recording studio. Sponsors of SUmmer @SUbCat include BBI, University College, and the Setnor School as part of the Music Technology Access Project (MTAP).

A roundup of sports television news in USA Today makes note of several of this year’s attendees at Sportscaster U, the annual broadcast training program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications for NBA players who wish to pursue television or radio careers.

The Post-Standard previewed a June 8-11 academic conference on entrepreneurship to be hosted at the Whitman School of Management. Thomas Kruczek, executive director of the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship, was quoted.

Recent SU graduates Eric Cleckner and David Chenell are featured in a Saturday Post-Standard story on the Syracuse Technology Garden business incubator. Cleckner and Chenell designed and promoted their social gaming brainchild, graFighters, through their office in the incubator.

The Post-Standard reported on the 2011 Central New York Rocket Team Challenge launchings at SU’s South Campus Saturday. Peter Plumley, research associate professor at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), was quoted. A video gallery from Syracuse.com is available. LCS and the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology co-hosted the launch competition for area students in grades 4-12.

FACULTY QUOTES

Michael Barkun, professor emeritus at the Maxwell School, is quoted in Los Angeles Times article on American politics and conspiracy theories.

Don Dutkowsky, professor of economics at the Maxwell School, spoke with YNN about the continuing but slow decline in gas prices.

Jeffrey Stonecash, professor of political science in the Maxwell School and College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in a YNN report on the upcoming 2012 race for Central New York’s 25th Congressional district representative.

SU alumnus Rami Khouri ’70, G’98, director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut and editor-at-large of the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper, authored a New York Times op-ed on governance in Egypt after the fall of the regime of former President Mubarak.

Me’Shae Brooks-Rolling, senior operations manager in the Burton Blatt Institute, authored a Post-Standard Moneywise article about tips and area resources for emerging entrepreneurs.

Rev. Tiffany Steinwert, dean of Hendricks Chapel, wrote a Post-Standard guest perspective on young people self-identifying as spiritual but not religious (SBNR).
