PhysOrg reported on the research led by College of Arts and Sciences Dean George Langford on the discovery of a protein that is involved in the motor-cargo mechanism that carries neurotransmitter chemicals to the nerve cell’s synapse.
Downtown Magazine reported on the VPA NYC Gala 2011 held May 19 and honoring Vanessa Williams and Frank Bisignano. The gala featured top collections from College of Visual and Performing Arts fashion design seniors.
A National Catholic Reporter feature on the Ecclesiological Investigations Research Network conference noted the presentation by Deborah Spini, instructor for Syracuse University Abroad in Florence, about perspectives on exclusion.
Syracuse.com reported on the grant to Syracuse University from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation for piloting a new practice of transfer enrollment by combining predictive financial aid modeling with academic advising for community college students.
The Post-Standard reported on plans for Syracuse University Library to build a new storage facility on South Campus, slated to be complete next year.
The Post-Standard and the Central New York Business Journal reported on the Whitman School of Management’s top-50 undergraduate business program ranking by Bloomberg Businessweek. The school is ranked 47th for a second year. In addition, the paper reported on specialty rankings for Whitman’s undergraduate programs in corporate strategy, ranked 22nd in the nation; operations management, ranked 26th; accounting, ranked 30th; and entrepreneurship, ranked third nationwide.
The Central New York Business Journal reported on the new funding provided to Lawrence Tavlarides, professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the L. C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, to explore energy-saving ideas in transportation.
FACULTY QUOTES
Forbes quotes Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, on the economic impact of Oprah Winfrey’s departure from daytime television. Thompson also spoke with WTOP-AM in Washington, D.C. (listen to clip), 9WSYR (watch clip) and the Christian Science Monitor about Winfrey’s influence on people’s lives through her talk show and cultural empire. Thompson also authored a Fox News column on Oprah. Additionally, he is quoted in the Baltimore Sun on the abundance of celebrity memoirs.
An op-ed on supply-side economics and taxes by David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, is featured in the Syracuse New Times. Johnston is also quoted in Salon.com and the Redding Record Searchlight (California) on the same topic.
Research on governmental disability screening processes co-authored by Jeffrey Kubik, associate professor of economics in the Maxwell School and The College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in a Science Daily report.
