SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

The Post-Standard reported on Thursday’s Chauncey D. Holmes Lecture and Awards Ceremony speaker, Jeremy Jackson of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Jackson’s talk on “The Future of the Oceans Past” was presented by the Department of Earth Sciences K. Douglas Nelson Colloquium Series in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

The Chronicle Herald (Halifax, Canada) reported on an art exhibition in Nova Scotia that includes work by Tom Sherman, professor in the Department of Transmedia in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, who won the 2010 Canadian Governor General’s Award in visual and media arts.

A 9WSYR (view clip) report on employment for prospective teachers graduating the SU School of Education and other institutions includes comments by SOE students and Jeffrey Mangram, assistant professor in SOE.

A Post-Standard editorial on Earth Day makes note of the recent announcement by the EPA at SU’s Warehouse recognizing the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County as a top EPA green community.

FACULTY QUOTES

The National Journal quotes Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, on grassroots lobbying campaigns to defend Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security from proposed cuts.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in a Washington Times story on comedian and producer Tina Fey and her new memoir “Bossypants.” Thompson is also quoted in a Times-Tribune (Scranton, Pa.) article about beverage makers switching away from petroleum-based plastics to bottles manufactured with plant-derived components.

Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School, is quoted in Salon.com and spoke with NPR Morning Edition, about the ongoing federal budget battle. Burman is also quoted on demographics and spending in a National Journal article about a predicted pivotal issue in 2012 elections on the size and cost of government.

College of Arts and Sciences senior Elton Wong is quoted in a WRVO radio report on Earth Day, Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle and the local balance between environmentalism and business interests.
