SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

A USA Today feature highlighted “Wretches and Jabberers” a documentary on the travels of disability rights advocates Tracy Thresher and Larry Bissonnette, co-produced by Douglas Biklen, dean of the School of Education at Syracuse University. The documentary was also featured in a Wall Street Journal Q-and-A with documentarian Gerardine Wurzburg, who will receive an honorary degree from SU on May 15. Massachusetts Newswire also mentioned the documentary in the scope of National Autism Awareness Month.

The Post-Standard and Syracuse New Times previewed the musical act that will perform as part of this weekend’s Relay for Life benefit at the Carrier Dome, which raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Dick Case’s Post-Standard column profiles Milton Sernett, professor emeritus of history and African American studies in The College of Arts and Sciences, for his new writings on agriculture in New York state.

The Post-Standard previewed the “Free to Love Without Fear: Defying the Church’s Persecution of LGBT People” series of events, co-sponsored by Hendricks Chapel, the Carnegie Religion and Media Program, the LGBT Resource Center and Pride Union.

WAER covered “How A Brand Took Wings,” a keynote address by Aflac CEO and chairman Dan Amos as part of the Whitman School of Management’s eighth annual Whitman Day, in honor of the school’s namesake, Martin J. Whitman ’49. Amos spoke to WAER about his recent trip to Japan to assess the effects of the earthquake and tsunami in March, as well as Aflac’s response to the tragedy in a country that is vital to their business, and the company’s 100 million yen ($1.2 million) donation to the Red Cross for relief efforts.

A PC Pro blog post “Microsoft pays $7.5m for IPv4 address stash” quotes School of Information Studies Professor Milton Mueller about what effect Microsoft’s recent purchase of IPv4 addresses will have on pricing.

Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, is quoted in a Reuters news story on baby boomers and proposals to reform Social Security.

Grant Reeher, professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, is quoted on AM NY news on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s redistricting reform proposal.

Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a Minnesota Post article on tax increases as part of the federal budget and state budgets.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is quoted in CTV (Canada) on the upcoming royal wedding.

Jason Fridley, assistant professor of biology in The College of Arts and Sciences, is quoted in Nature.com on recent research that suggests algae biodiversity cleans streams.
