SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Time magazine reported on the appointment of James Steinberg, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, as dean of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and University Professor of Social Science, International Affairs and Law.

The LA Times, Twice, and Stereofile previewed the album for “Wretches and Jabberers” a documentary on the travels of disability rights advocates Tracy Thresher and Larry Bissonnette, co-produced by Douglas Biklen, dean of the School of Education at Syracuse University. The documentary was also the subject of a MSNBC Q-and-A with Vanessa Trump and singer-songwriter and producer J. Ralph, and was mentioned in a Guardian (UK) article on autism’s portrayal in film. 9News in Denver also recently highlighted the film.

The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) was mentioned in Inside Indiana Business for being recognized by Inc. magazine as among the “10 Best-In-Class” college-based entrepreneurship courses/programs in the United States. The article mentions Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management as one of seven business schools participating in the EBV program.

The International News reported on Pakistani journalist and investigative reporter Umar Cheema being the 2011 recipient of the Tully Free Speech Award from the Newhouse School’s Tully Center for Free Speech.

The Journal News previewed a lecture by Mary Karr, Jesse Truesdell Peck Professor of Literature in The College of Arts and Sciences, to be delivered at the Maryknoll Mission Center in the Hudson Valley.

9WSYR featured the trip by 33 students from the Syracuse City School District to Dellas Graphics to watch books they’ve written roll off the presses. The third-graders participated in the Say Yes After School program and wrote the books as part of the Say Yes to Education Young Authors Series. Illustration students from SU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts also contributed to the book’s creation.

Sean Kirst’s Post-Standard column mentions SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor in a tribute to Susan B. Anthony and local female leaders.

The Post-Standard and YNN reported on SU’s commitment to present the May 22 Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra concert, in the wake of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra recently dissolving.

The Post-Standard previewed the air guitar competition in Syracuse, co-hosted by The Department of Art and Music Histories in SU’s College of Arts and Sciences.

FACULTY QUOTES

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, appeared on MSNBC’s “Ed Show” (view clip) to discuss Medicaid reform and tax proposals.

Len Burman, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Professor of Public Affairs in the Maxwell School, is quoted in a McClatchy news story on proposals to revamp Medicare and Medicaid.

An Associated Press article on a U.S. entrepreneur’s plans to launch the world’s most powerful rocket since man went to the moon quoted Henry Lambright, professor of political science and public administration in the Maxwell School.

Menachem Z. Rosensaft, distinguished visiting lecturer at Syracuse University College of Law, authored an op-ed for Jewish Week on Poland’s pledge to compensate Holocaust survivors for property stolen from them.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Reuters article on the new look “Arthur” film.

Roy Gutterman, associate professor of communications law and journalism at the Newhouse School, is quoted in the Auburn Citizen on local implications for the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Westboro Baptist Church protests.
