The documentary “Wretches and Jabberers” about the travels of disability rights advocates Tracy Thresher and Larry Bissonnette, co-produced by Douglas Biklen, dean of the School of Education at Syracuse University, was featured and reviewed by the New York Times, Hollywood Reporter, The Examiner, Variety and PRI. A Parade.com interview with Biklen and filmmaker Gerardine Wurzburg about “Wretches and Jabberers” accompanied Parade magazine’s Sunday print feature on living with autism.

SU’s Cold Case Justice Initiative is cited in a Los Angeles Times article on the investigation into the Civil Rights-era death of Ferriday, La. shoe shop owner Frank Morris, pursued by journalist Stanley Nelson and the Concordia Sentinel. The article was also republished in the Huffington Post and appeared on the KSPR (Springfield, Mo.) “On the Media” program.

Media Bistro reported that MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough will emcee the fifth annual Mirror Awards, to be presented in June by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

A feature in the El Paso Times on the publication of the new El Paso Museum of Arts catalog for its European art collection notes Syracuse University as a contributing institution for essays in the catalog. “European Treasures from the El Paso Museum of Art” was created in celebration of the 50th anniversary of artwork donations from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation collection to the museum.

SU’s role in creation of a Wireless Grid Innovation Testbed developing ways to connect PCs, cameras, phones and other common devices by a wireless grid and finding practical applications is featured in a Campus Technology magazine article.

A Buffalo News article on the Fair Health website providing a cost-checking service for dental and medical expenses makes note of SU as the base for Fair Health collaboration with other universities.

SU research with Polaris Library Systems is noted in a Library Journal overview of library automation, and in a Post-Standard article on state funding of Central New York’s “Grants for Growth” program.

The expansion of SU’s programs in Los Angeles is featured in a Post-Standard story about the University’s west coast campus relocation to Sherman Oaks. Joan Adler, West Coast director of development, is mentioned.

The Whitman School of Management’s ranking in Bloomberg Businessweek was reported in the April 1-7 issue of Scotsman Press.

Peter Plumley, research associate professor at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, is highlighted as a Post-Standard Achievement Award recipient. In the article, Samuel Clemence, professor of civil and environmental engineering at LCS, is quoted.

FACULTY QUOTES

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story on CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric.

University Professor Peter Blanck, chairman of the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI), is quoted in a Compliance Week article (subscription only) about new regulations approved by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Blanck was noted as an authority in the new rules.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, was interviewed about taxes for the Sunday KPFK (Los Angeles) broadcast of “Free Forum with Terrence McNally.” A podcast is available here. Also, Johnston authored a Tax.com column about Oregon state finances being derived more from lottery revenues than from corporate income taxes. The column was also cited in an AmericaBlog posting.

Mitch Franklin, assistant professor of accounting in the Whitman School of Management, authored a column in the April/May issue of CNY Business Exchange on setting up a new business.
