During the 2010-11 academic year, the Middle Eastern Studies Program will continue its tradition of holding an annual essay contest for undergraduate and graduate students.
The Hasan Abdullah Yabroudi Prize will be awarded to the best two essays dealing with any aspect of the Middle East and North Africa that are written by one undergraduate and one graduate student enrolled at Syracuse University. The authors of the winning papers will each be presented with a certificate and a $500 stipend.
The entries, which can originate as course papers, will be evaluated anonymously by a faculty committee on the basis of originality of research and conceptualization, cogency of argument and clarity of writing. The essays must not exceed 7,500 words (including bibliography) and must have been produced between August 25, 2009 and April 14, 2011. Essays can be nominated by the faculty or by students. The committee will only consider one paper from any one student.
Submission deadline is April 15, 2011.
