The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) is now offering equity educational workshops on a monthly basis for students, staff and faculty. The workshops will offer participants a more thorough understanding of equity and its impact and how to be equity-minded.
Led by Ebony King, diversity and inclusion specialist in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the equity educational workshops are held in conjunction with a host of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) workshops across campus.
The equity workshops are promoted alongside other DEIA sessions held by other areas on campus giving people one place to access DEIA sessions.
“There is so much education around DEIA happening at the University, in the schools, colleges and the departments that we want to showcase,” says King. “Our office’s focus is on equity, as a foundational element of inclusion and the information learned in our workshops is a great supplement to other DEIA sessions.”
In offering the equity workshops to students, the ODI partnered with the Wellness Leadership Initiative. “The Wellness Leadership Initiative educates students on aspects of health and wellness; understanding and applying the principles of equity is essential to being well,” says Health Promotions Coordinator Vinnie Cuevas.
In other DEIA sessions, Jeffrey Mangram, provost faculty fellow and associate professor in the School of Education, and Melissa Luke, Provost Faculty Fellow and Dean’s Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Services in the School of Education, lead workshops for faculty that help to shift culture in the classrooms.
“These sessions are designed to support faculty members, based on real-life situations and concerns that they are encountering in the classrooms,” Mangram says. “Faculty continue to enhance their skill sets and knowledge regarding DEIA issues.”
