National Student Employment Week is an important recognition of all that students contribute to the campus community. Every year there are over 6,000 student employees in a variety of positions from the Barnes Center at The Arch, Food Services, Syracuse University Libraries and more. Students use these opportunities not only for financial assistance but to gain professional skills and competencies that will assist them in their professional careers.
In recognition of National Student Employment Week, the ’Cuse Works team organized a variety of events to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and dedication of student employees. Part of those activities included awarding students that went above and beyond within their roles. Nominations were reviewed and winners chosen by the Student Employment Recognition Committee.
“It was uplifting to read nominations regarding the work that our student employees do on a daily basis, especially during COVID-19. With the uncertainty of the past year, student employees quickly adapted to the rules and regulations surrounding COVID-19 to ensure that they kept themselves and campus safe,” shared Student Employment Recognition Committee member Deena Capria, Food Services office coordinator. “It is important that we recognize our student employees because the Syracuse University campus would not be able to function without their hard work.”

“Working as a student employee for the COVID-19 PMO has had such a positive impact on my life. During the school year I’ve participated in interviews for career opportunities and many of the questions asked revolved around my position at the COVID-19 PMO. Having the opportunity to see and be a part of the operations that directly had an influence on the well-being of the University and community meant so much to me,” said Issak Hernandez ’20, G’22. “To be selected is great and I am thankful for the recognition. To be selected means that this award also goes to everyone that was part of the team and that this is something they can be proud of as well.”

“The University’s successful COVID-19 response and recovery efforts are driven in large part by the dedication and efforts of our own students. The COVID-19 PMO has been supported by more than 100 students working as contact tracers, test site administrators, and laboratory assistants, among other roles,” shared Adam J. Hepburn, executive director of operations, Strategic Initiatives and Innovation/COVID-19 Project Management Office. “These students’ efforts have been critical in keeping not only their fellow students, but also the broader University and Syracuse communities safe during this challenging time.”
