Message from Dean of Students Marianne Thomson

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

It is with sadness and sorrow I write to share that a member of our Syracuse University community has passed away. Zaiden Geraige Neto, Ph.D., was a student in the College of Law pursuing a master of laws (LL.M.) degree. He was studying remotely this semester from home in Brazil, where he was also a highly regarded class action lawyer and law professor.

Chancellor Kent Syverud and I join those across our community and the São Paulo community in mourning this loss. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Zaiden’s wife, family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.

In times of grief and sadness, I remind our campus community that services are available for support. If you are seeking support, please do not hesitate to contact the following resources:

• For students, confidential counseling services are available through the Barnes Center at The Arch 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 315.443.8000.
• Ongoing support is also available to students through the Dean of Students Office Monday through Friday by calling 315.443.4357.
• For faculty and staff, trained clinicians are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Carebridge, the University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. They can be reached by calling 800.437.0911.
