Shannon Monnat, associate professor of sociology and Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion in the Maxwell School, was quoted in the Vox story “Exit polls suggest significant polarization about the pandemic and its economic fallout.” Monnat, who also serves as the co-director of the Policy, Place, and Population Health Lab, says that the government cannot separate the issues of controlling the virus and restarting the economy. “If we want people to feel comfortable enough to go back out to bars and restaurants, to travel, and to send their kids to school, we need to see a decline in cases, and people need to feel confident that their peers will behave responsibly for the greater good,” says Monnat.
