Whitney Phillips, assistant professor of communication and rhetorical studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was quoted in the NBC News story “Inside the campaign to ‘pizzagate’ Hunter Biden.” Phillips, an expert on disinformation and digital ethics, says that recent attempts to push false conspiracy theories about Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, mirror that of the 2016 election with claims against Hillary Clinton. Phillips says the same ‘trolls’ are “playing the hits from 2016” in attempts to garner support for President Trump, but that “this is gaslighting of the highest order,.”
