Off-Campus Monitoring | Halloween This Year | Weekend Activities

Thursday, October 22, 2020, By News Staff
Share

Dear Students:

We have just over a month to go until residential instruction concludes. To ensure we can remain on campus until that time, it’s on all of us to remain vigilant and committed to good health practices. We cannot be complacent. As Chancellor Kent Syverud said yesterday during his University Senate remarks, we are only one party away from an event that could close our campus.

Off-Campus Monitoring and Potential Conduct Charges

As we head into the weekend, I can’t stress enough how important it is to follow the Stay Safe Pledge. That includes wearing masks, social distancing and limiting the size of social gatherings. We will continue to take added measures to ensure the safety of our entire community. They include:

  • Staff in the Department of Public Safety and the Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience will be monitoring off-campus residences for social gatherings that exceed the five-person limit. Anyone found to be in violation will be referred to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) for review and appropriate action. This semester, many referrals have resulted in sanctions, up to suspension.
  • Any Syracuse University student listed as a leaseholder or occupant for an off-campus property where a party is held in violation of New York State social gathering directives or provisions of the Syracuse University Stay Safe Pledge will be immediately referred to OSRR for review and appropriate action.

Halloween This Year

We are aware that some students in our community are already planning Halloween parties. A Halloween party in which participants are not keeping their distance and packing small spaces with large groups of people is the very definition of a super-spreader event. Students who host or participate in Halloween parties that violate public health guidance will be referred to OSRR for review and appropriate action.

I implore you to start thinking about how you can enjoy Halloween this year in small groups, with roommates or by participating in any number of activities we will have planned. We will share more about activities scheduled for Halloween weekend next week.
