Take Precautions, Stay in Central New York and Be Smart!

Dear Students:

The upcoming weekend is a “fork in the road” moment for our university and, more specifically, our ability to continue residential instruction. As shared with you multiple times over the last several days, the uptick in COVID-19 cases on our campus is the direct result of a very small number of individuals violating the Stay Safe Pledge. Your choices have an impact on the entire University. They mean the difference between finishing the semester here in Syracuse or going home to finish the semester online.

The fact is: this isn’t a typical semester. Hanging out with your friends in large groups or traveling to other campuses is not OK this year. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still make the most of your time here.

Weekend Activities: Oct. 8-11

As we head into the weekend and as a result of our decision to reduce in-person activities, we have worked hard to create new and transition previously planned events to a virtual format. Here are just some of the things happening this weekend, beginning tonight:

Today

Orange Night Live Esports: Fall Guys

Zumba Party at Home

Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month: Y to abuela, ¿dónde está? Experience of Racial Inequality in Puerto Rican Culture

Matters that Matter with Justine Hastings and Ryan Golden

SoulTalk: Body Acceptance

LGBTQ+ History Month Potash Keynote with Seth Davis G’18, Ph.D.

South Campus Trivia Night

University Lectures: Nikole Hannah-Jones

Orange After Dark Comedy Night: Comedy Magician Michael Kent

Friday, Oct. 9

Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month: “Negro: A Docu-Series About Latinx Identity”

Rep Where You’re From Open Mic

Trivia Night

WeRound: Round Table Virtual Discussion

Orange After Dark: Virtual Escape Room

Saturday, Oct. 10

LGBTQ+ History Month: Virtual Drag Queen Bingo with Monique Heart

Virtual Game Night

Sunday, Oct. 11

Music and Message: Beauty/Brokenness

Online Movie: “The Grandmaster”

Don’t let your guard down!

I’m confident we can overcome this recent challenge but to do so we must take care of ourselves and each other. So remember:

  1. Stay in Central New York! Do not travel to other colleges or universities, even if they are close to Syracuse.
  2. Don’t host or participate in gatherings of more than five.
  3. Wear your mask or face covering, always!
  4. Maintain 6 feet of distance.
  5. Do not invite family or friends from outside Central New York, including those who are close to Syracuse, to visit.
  6. Wash your hands often.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Do your part. And don’t forget, your actions not only impact you but have consequences for those around you as well.

Sincerely,

Robert D. Hradsky, Ed.D.
Vice President for the Student Experience
