Whitney Phillips, assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was interviewed for the Time article “How Conspiracy Theories Are Shaping the 2020 Election – and Shaking the Foundation of American Democracy.” Phillips, who is an expert on political communication and disinformation, believes that a growing number of Americans are not responding to public life in rationale ways. “You cannot have a functioning democracy when people are not at the very least occupying the same solar system,” says Phillips.
