Campus Climate Survey

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

This past spring, the Board of Trustees formed a Special Committee on University Climate, Diversity and Inclusion and an Independent Advisory Panel (IAP) to assess our campus climate and advise us on issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Members of both the special committee and the IAP held dialogue and listening sessions with members of our community, including students, faculty and staff. With that input, the IAP and special committee began developing actionable recommendations to make our campus a more welcoming place for all.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the work of the special committee was temporarily delayed. With the resumption of that work, they are taking two more steps forward and need your help. We are undertaking:

  1. A 10- to 15-minute Campus Climate Pulse Survey: To better understand the diverse experiences of our entire community, a campus climate survey will be sent to all active students, faculty and staff. The survey is being conducted and led by Damon A. Williams, a member of the IAP. The survey is 100 percent confidential. Results will be analyzed and will inform further recommendations to be made to the Board of Trustees. A link to the survey will be emailed to you on Sept. 22. I urge our entire community to take the time to complete this survey. Your contribution to our collective effort is important for its success. No matter where you stand on these issues, please share your thoughts and experiences by completing the survey. The Board is listening and is truly interested in what you have to say.
  2. A Review of Current University Diversity Initiatives: Each college will catalogue what Syracuse University is currently doing on campus to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. This summary will help us determine what programs, plans or trainings can improve our strategy and offerings, and help us coordinate and partner with one another across the University.

Each element of this ongoing project will help Syracuse University implement real change. Your participation, perspectives and voices are important as we build a more welcoming, equitable and inclusive community for all. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Kent Syverud
