Gladys McCormick, associate professor of history in the Maxwell School, was quoted in the Al Jazeera story “Mexico ‘more violent’ and ‘worse’ two years after AMLO election.” Two years ago the election of Lopez Obrador brought hope for change to many Mexican citizens, however his administration has “been beset by COVID-19, worsening crime, and pressure from the Trump administration.” Professor McCormick, who serves as the Jay and Debe Moskowitz Endowed Chair in Mexico-U.S. Relations, says that “everything he (Lopez Obrador) has put into place in terms of security has either been amateur or just very papered over in terms of political rhetoric,” and “the optics of what is happening on this two year anniversary are disheartening for what lays ahead.”
