Removing Belongings from On-Campus Housing

As developments surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic continue to evolve, I know retrieval of belongings has been top-of-mind for many of you. I write to share that we have received further guidance pertaining to travel and can now begin the process of scheduling students’ return to campus to collect and remove belongings.

Beginning on Saturday, May 30, and continuing through Sunday, June 14, Syracuse University will offer students and families three options for removing their belongings from their on-campus residences. In consultation with local health officials, the University has prepared a plan to allow a staggered move-out schedule for families who are able to return to campus. In addition, the University has developed options for students and families who will not be able to return to campus during this time.

Option 1: Return to campus and retrieve your belongings.
Option 2: Have a friend, family member or moving company retrieve your belongings.
Option 3: University staff will pack your belongings, at no charge. Students will contract with Lazybones for storage or shipping.

Details for each of these options are outlined below, as well as information on returning your key and checking out of your on-campus residence. Additional details regarding the check-out process, social distancing requirements, available moving equipment, campus vehicle access and parking are available on the Student Living website.

I encourage you to continue to maintain good health practices and social distancing guidelines as you return to campus. Your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines will provide for a safer move-out process.

Take this action: Fill out the “Move-Out Selection Time” form in your MySlice Housing Portal.

For students and families who can to return to campus to pack their belongings, we have developed a staggered move-out schedule based upon public health guidelines, which will limit the number of people in any one area. The schedule is in place to maintain necessary social distancing. Please bring your SU I.D. with you when you return to campus, as you will need it to access your residence hall.

·         For North Campus and Skyhall residents: Beginning Tuesday, May 26, at noon EST, you will be able to select a pick-up time using your MySlice Housing Portal. Three-hour time slots will be available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, beginning Saturday, May 30, and ending Sunday, June 14. Students and families may NOT visit campus outside of their scheduled time period. In order to comply with social distancing guidelines and public health best practices, we have limited the number of groups who may arrive in each three-hour period. Residents arriving without a confirmed appointment may be denied access or be subject to extended wait times to enter facilities in order to maintain appropriate social distancing requirements.

·         For South Campus Apartment residents: Scheduling for South Campus apartments is also required. Beginning Tuesday, May 26, at noon EST, you will be able to select a pick-up time using your MySlice Housing Portal. Keys should be returned to the South Campus Housing Office, located at the Goldstein Student Center. For your convenience, a 24/7 key drop box is located on the exterior of the building.

Option 2: Have a Friend, Family Member or Moving Company Retrieve Your Belongings

Take these two actions: Fill out the “Move-Out Selection Time” form in your MySlice Housing Portal, and then complete the pick-up authorization form on the Student Living website.

·         Obtain permission from your roommate(s) in the form of a text or email.

·         Select a pick-up time on the MySlice Housing Portal between Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, June 14.

·         Complete the pick-up authorization form on the Student Living website.

·         University staff will work with the friend, family member or moving company to ensure the student has a video conference during the packing process.

Option 3: University Staff will Pack Belongings, at No Charge; Students Will Contract with Lazybones for Storage or Shipping

Take these three actions: Fill out the “Registration for Packing and Storage” form on your MySlice Housing Portal, register with Lazybones to have your belongings stored or shipped, and then mail your keys back to the University.

Registration for Packing and Storage:

·         Complete a request in the MySlice Housing Portal to have your belongings packed free of charge by the University. Students will video conference with University staff during the packing process.

·         By June 14, students must register with Lazybones to have your belongings stored or shipped.

·         Students will need to return their keys by mail. If you live in a North Campus residence hall, mail your keys to the Office of Student Living, 111 Waverly Avenue, Suite 200, Syracuse, NY, 13244. Please include your name, SU I.D. number, residence hall name and room number. If you reside in a South Campus apartment, please mail your key(s) to the Housing Office, 401 Skytop Road, Syracuse, NY, 13244. Please include your name, SU I.D. number, building number, road and apartment number.

·         We ask that you please take care when mailing the keys, so they do not come out of the envelope. This includes using a padded envelope, taping the envelope closed, etc. Once Housing or Student Living has received your key(s), your check-out will be complete. If your key(s) are not received by Monday, June 22, 2020, you will be charged a key replacement fee.

Additional Information

If you are returning to campus, in alignment with public health guidance and physical distancing, we ask that you do the following:

·         Coordinate separate move-out times with your roommate(s)/suitemate(s).

·         Allow only one other person to accompany you into the facility at a time. When entering facilities, all guests must be accompanied by the resident. You may have more than one person helping you, but only one helper will be allowed to enter the building with you at a time.

·         Do not travel to campus if you have been ill within the last 14 days or are currently ill. The same applies to any guests accompanying you.

·         Per New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order, anyone out in public is required to wear a mask or face covering. Gloves are encouraged for the packing and moving process.

·         Maintain six feet of separation while waiting in any lines at entrances, elevators and stairwells.

·         Restrict elevator usage to one resident and their guest at a time.

·         Wash your hands frequently, and encourage those who assist you to do the same.

Our ability to maintain this process will be dependent upon everyone’s cooperation with these safety guidelines, so please understand that those who do not comply may be asked to leave.

Any belongings left behind in rooms will either be donated or discarded. However, upon final room checks, if anything of significant value is found (i.e., passports, credit cards, jewelry, cell phones, laptops, etc.), the Office of Student Living will safeguard the item and attempt to contact the appropriate student.
