Whitman professor recognized as top researcher in field of innovation managementMarch 30, 2006Amy Schmitzaemehrin@syr.edu

David Wilemon, the Earl and Josephine Snyder Professor of Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, has recently been cited as one of the most active researchers in the field of innovation and technology management in an article in R&D Management (Vol. 36, No. 2), written by Derrick F. Ball and John Rigby.

The article, “Disseminating Research in Management of Technology: Journals and Authors,” looks at the history and development of journals specializing in innovation management and the emergence of R&D, innovation and technology management as a subject in its own right. Ball and Rigby also analyzed the authorship of articles appearing in the top 11 journals in this field between 1954 and 2003, to determine if particular journals might best meet the needs of the various innovation management audiences and to determine the most persistent authors in the field, whom readers might want to track for future publications.

Among the 9,335 researchers who contributed articles in the 49-year period covered by the study, Wilemon was one of only 20 authors to have published 20 or more papers in leading journals.

Wilemon led the founding of the Whitman School’s innovation management program in 1981, and in 1993 the program secured a generous contribution establishing the named Earl V. Snyder Innovation Management Center in the school.

Wilemon’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of new product development, project management, technology management and corporate venturing. Wilemon has consulted widely with corporations that include Apple, General Electric, 3M, Chase Manhattan Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, AT&T, Schlumberger, NASA, Upjohn, the European Space Agency, Welch-Allyn, Texas Instruments and Bechtel. He was a founder of the Product Development and Management Association, serves on the Board of Directors of Anaren Microwave and has been an adviser to several startup companies.
