Students are invited to help pack book bags with clothing and school supplies for local schools on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Noble Room in Hendricks Chapel. The Office of Engagement Programs at Hendricks Chapel and the Christian Campus Ministry are hosting the event as part of the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
At the start of the event, students can enjoy free waffles from Funk ’n Waffles. Organizers will have information on how to get involved with volunteer opportunities on and off campus.
Following the tabling, students can assist in packing 200 book bags with winter wear and school supplies. The book bags will be donated to the Public Service Leadership Academy at Fowler and Delaware Academy in the Syracuse City School District.
Local Syracuse community organizations are also hosting volunteer and giving opportunities, in honor of the MLK Day of Service.
On Monday, Jan. 20, the United Way, the Central New York Area Labor Federation AFL-CIO and the Greater Syracuse Labor Council are hosting an MLK Day of Service Food and Clothing Drive from 8 a.m. to noon at the Southwest Community Center, 401 South Ave., Syracuse. Men, women and children’s new and gently used clothing will be accepted along with food donations.
Also on Monday, the People’s A.M.E. Zion Church, 2306 S. Salina St., is hosting its fourth annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mid-Year Replenish and Refuel Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for K-12 city youth. There will be free haircuts/hairstyles from volunteer barbers and hairstylists, free school supplies and free food.
