Housing Committee Seeks Additional Input

This past July, Syracuse University began a comprehensive review of its student housing to better understand residential options and determine future needs in support of enriching the student experience. Through its engagement with an expansive group of stakeholders, the committee’s scope evolved to include the residential needs of graduate students, faculty and staff.

As part of the engagement phase of the housing assessment, the University released an online survey to all current undergraduate students in September. The response rate was strong and provided the committee important information on current living conditions, student satisfaction, and preferences for new and improved housing offerings.

In order to receive feedback from other University stakeholders, on Nov. 7 the University will release an online survey to graduate students followed by the release of an online survey for faculty and staff members later this month.

These surveys will help the committee better understand housing needs of the University’s diverse campus communities and make recommendations based on the potential demand for short- and long-term housing on both North and South Campus, as well as in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Surveys will be sent to registered Syracuse University email addresses and responses will be collected anonymously. The data collected from the surveys, along with engagements with students, University leaders, deans, faculty and other staff members, will assist the housing committee in determining how the University can best leverage its residential offerings to enrich the experience of all constituents.

The next phase of the assessment will include facilities analysis and the identification of opportunities for enhancement of, or addition to, current housing offerings. Additionally, as part of an ongoing benchmarking assessment, select committee members will also be touring a sample of contemporary housing projects on other university campuses. Further updates will be provided to the University community as work continues.
