Harvey Kaiser, former vice president for facilities administration and faculty member in the School of Architecture and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6, after a brief illness.

Kaiser played a central role in the planning and management of key building projects over a 23-year career with Syracuse University, including the Dome, Schine Student Center and Skytop Student Center. He also served as an associate professor of urban and regional planning in the Maxwell School and a faculty member in the School of Architecture.

Kaiser earned a bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1959, a master of architecture degree from the School of Architecture in 1967 and a Ph.D. in social sciences from the Maxwell School in 1973.

Later in his career, Kaiser was president and founder of Harvey H. Kaiser Associates Inc., a consulting firm specializing in architecture, urban planning and facilities management. With an affinity for Adirondack-style rustic architecture, he authored “Great Camps of the Adirondacks,” “The National Park Architecture Sourcebook,” several National Park guidebooks, and numerous books and studies on urban planning and architecture.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in DeWitt, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kaiser’s memory to Pebble HiIl Presbyterian Church, Adirondack Architectural Heritage or Symphoria. His obituary can be found at https://fairchildmeech.com/tribute/details/358/Harvey-Kaiser/obituary.html.
