The Autonomous Systems Policy Initiative, a new Universitywide effort, is convening faculty and students across disciplines, along with industry experts from the public, private and nonprofit sectors to explore the technology, policy and wider social implications of autonomous systems. The symposium will be held Monday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center.
From self-driving cars to drone delivery systems, from robotic underwater vessels to smart-home technologies, autonomous systems are transforming our world—posing complex social, ethical and legal questions that demand interdisciplinary, multi-faceted research.
The symposium will include opening remarks by David Van Slyke, dean of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs; Chancellor Kent Syverud; and Jamie Winders, director, Autonomous Systems Policy Initiative, and chair and professor of geography, in the Maxwell School, and a keynote by Travis Mason ’06, vice president and head of regulatory and certification at Airbus. There will be panels on technology and design; policy and governance; and broader social implications.
