Today astronomers announced they have successfully captured the first direct visual evidence of a supermassive black hole and its shadow.
Duncan Brown is the Charles Brightman Endowed Professor of Physics at Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Brown was a member of the physics team that detected gravitational waves by LIGO.
Brown says:
“For years, science fiction movies have imagined what black holes look like. The picture taken by the Event Horizon Telescope shows us what they really look like.
“The glow around the black hole is from light bent by the black hole’s gravity.
“This is the real-life counterpart to the black hole Gargantua from the movie Interstellar.”
