Service of Commemoration to Be Held March 20 in Hendricks Chapel

Syracuse University will hold its third annual Service of Commemoration—honoring faculty, staff, retirees, students and trustees who passed away in the period of Jan. 1, 2018-March 20, 2019—on Wednesday, March 20, at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.

The service will include prayer and music by University Organist Anne Laver and the Hendricks Chapel Choir, led by director Peppie Calvar. Communication Access Real-Time Translation and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available. To request accommodations, contact Hendricks Chapel at 315.443.2901 or chapel@syr.edu.

The names of those who have passed away will be read and candles will be lit collectively in their memory. Remarks will be offered by Chancellor Kent Syverud and other members of the University community.

The service is held annually and is inspired by the Remembrance Scholars’ motto of “Look Back, Act Forward,” a call to action to remember those we have lost and act forward in their memory.

“Our campus community includes an inspiring collection of students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni and friends,” says Hendricks Chapel Dean Brian Konkol. “The Service of Commemoration creates a sacred space for us to pause, gather, grieve, pay respects and discern how we can best honor the legacies of those who came before by offering a thriving world to those who will one day come after us. This is a special opportunity.”

The following week, in order to continue to provide a community of support, Hendricks Chapel will sponsor “A Dinner Conversation on Spirituality, Loss and Grief” on Tuesday, March 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Noble Room of Hendricks Chapel. Following a free dinner, chaplains from a diversity of religious, spiritual, moral and ethical perspectives will provide participants with a casual and inclusive opportunity to share their stories, listen to others and build community for the sake of peace and healing.
