Faculty Nominees Sought for Seinfeld Scholar Award

The Office of the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs is inviting nominations for the Seinfeld Scholar Award, established in 2004 with a gift from Judith Greenberg Seinfeld ’56 to recognize passion for excellence, creativity and originality in academic or artistic fields and encourage continued outstanding performance.

This year, the Seinfeld Scholar Award will honor a faculty member with a cash grant of $10,000.  While there are no restrictions on use of the funds, the grant is intended to encourage honorees in their work, and make possible an initiative or project of special interest to the recipient.

Each year, through a nomination process, the Seinfeld Scholar Award is given to faculty or students who have made outstanding contributions to the beauty of the world, to human values and to ending human abuse anywhere in the world. Those chosen are determined to have the ability to motivate and bring out the best in others. The award program is offered on a three-year cycle, recognizing a faculty member in the first two years of the cycle, and two graduating seniors in the third year.

Faculty may be nominated by their respective dean, or by their associate dean, department chair or program director with the dean’s concurrence. Faculty cannot self-nominate. A committee of distinguished members of the University faculty review faculty nominations. The committee will forward its recommendation to the Chancellor who makes the final selection.

Letters of nomination should be submitted by Nov. 30 and addressed to the review committee in care of LaVonda N. Reed, associate provost for faculty affairs. [Editor’s note (Dec. 6, 2018): The deadline for nominations has been extended to Jan. 25, 2019.] Nomination packets, which include the nominee’s CV, nomination letter and, if necessary, letter of concurrence by the nominee’s dean should be delivered in hard copy to 503 Crouse-Hinds Hall and provided electronically as a single PDF by email to Sharon Alestalo (swalesta@syr.edu). For more information about the nomination and selection process go to the program website.

Judith Greenberg Seinfeld ’56 established the endowment for the award to recognize Chancellor Emeritus Kenneth A. Shaw and Mary Ann Shaw for their years of devoted service to the University. Seinfeld has a long legacy of involvement with and support for Syracuse University. A life Trustee, she is a former chair of the board’s Academic Affairs Committee and currently serves on the Facilities Committee and is also a member of the Chancellor’s Council and the Society of Fellows. She also has served on the Board of Advisors for the School of Education, the Advisory Board for the School of Architecture, and the Board of Governors of Hillel at Syracuse. She has created endowments for Creative Teaching and the Seinfeld Housing Initiative, which offers students at the School of Architecture a greater awareness of development as it relates to art and business and defines our culture.
