With Big Orange Weekends Ahead, City Of Syracuse, Syracuse University Remind Fans to Follow Parking Regulations

As the Syracuse University football team returns to the Dome for home games the next two weekends, the City of Syracuse and Syracuse University are reminding fans to adhere to street parking requirements. After an increase in illegal parking in surrounding neighborhoods and in Thornden Park during games earlier this season, parking regulations will be enforced for upcoming home games.

Syracuse Football plays the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in the Dome on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 12:20 p.m. This weekend is also Orange Central, Syracuse University’s annual homecoming, during which more than 2,000 alumni and friends will be on campus for various events and activities.

The following weekend, Saturday, Oct. 27, Syracuse will take on North Carolina State. The time of that game has not been announced yet, but coincides with Family Weekend, when parents, friends and families of Syracuse students arrive on campus to participate in a weekend of programs and activities.

“Illegally parked cars create a hazard for our neighborhoods and for the people attending the games. In the interest of public safety, ticketing will be conducted in the University area around major events,” said Lt. Dave Brown, Syracuse Police Department, Traffic Section. “We want fans to have a great, safe time on the Hill, so we’re providing advance notice. We’d rather people park legally than have to deal with tickets or being towed.”

Officers assigned for traffic management before and after games will be deployed to ticket illegally parked cars during games for the remainder of the season.

  • On city streets, vehicles that violate alternate side of the street parking requirements may be ticketed.
  • In Thornden Park, Syracuse University will place traffic barrels where parking is not allowed to prevent illegal parking. Vehicles parked illegally in the park may also be subject to tickets.
  • Vehicles blocking driveways; using handicap parking without authorization; parked within 10 feet of a fire hydrant; or preventing passage of public safety equipment may be towed.

Fines for illegal parking are:

  • Overtime at a meter: $30
  • No parking zone: $40
  • Blocking a fire hydrant: $55
  • Unauthorized handicap parking: $105

Fans attending either of the games should plan ahead and identify parking opportunities prior to arrival. There is plenty of paid parking available in garages located near and around campus. Rideshare drop-off and pick-up is located at the corner of University Place and South Crouse Avenue.
