The Lillian and Emanuel Slutzker Center for International Services at Syracuse University will host a variety of activities celebrating International Education Week (IEW), Nov. 12-21, 2004. A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Education, IEW celebrates a national focus on international education and exchange worldwide.

Members of the SU and greater Syracuse community are invited to attend and support IEW events. For more information, call the Slutzker Center at 315-443-2457.

Friday, Nov. 12-Sunday, Nov. 21

“School of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition.” Features more than 70 works by 36 current SU professors from departments and programs including fashion and design technologies, visual communication, sculpture, painting, museum studies, ceramics, art education and advertising design.

“Three Suites from Inside the Barbed Wire.” Features the work of SU alumnus Roger Shimomura G’69.

Ongoing exhibitions in the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery, located in the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building. Lowe Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, noon-5:00 p.m.; Wednesday, noon-8:00 p.m.; and closed Mondays. For more information, call 315-443-3127.

“Global Transformation of Childhood.” Dr. Uwe P. Gielen of St. Francis College will discuss children’s environments in poorer and richer countries. Offered by the Child and Family Studies Speaker Series. 137 Sims Hall, 2:00 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 15

“Film: ‘North of ’49’.” “North of ’49” tells a story that could have happened in any community in America in the wake of 9/11. Four teens destroy the sacred place of neighbors who wear beards and turbans and practice an unfamiliar religion rooted in an unfamiliar culture. Discussion with S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications Professor Richard Breyer and Visiting Professor David Coryell follows the film. Noble Room, Hendricks Chapel; 12:00-1:30 p.m.

“Career Development for International Students.” Joint program offered by the Center for Career Services and the Slutzker Center on how to launch a successful career path in the U.S. Program addresses immigration options and interviewing tactics. The Slutzker Center, 310 Walnut Pl.; 2:30-4:00 p.m.

“Exploring the International Soul of Syracuse.” Panel discussion on the migration of various ethnic groups into the Syracuse area and their impact on the community. Sponsored by the Slutzker Center. 304 ABC, the Schine Student Center; 6:30-8:00 p.m.

“Alternative Health Care Practices Around the World: India, Philippines and the Caribbean.” Presentation on alternative health preventative practices and treatments in India by graduate student Karthikeyan Radhakrishnan, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Poster board displays on health care in the Caribbean and fertility holiday in the Philippines, 11:00 a.m.-4:00p.m; and health care in India, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Caribbean Student Association. 123 Bird Library.

“Glimpse of Indonesia: Bali and Lombok Traditional Food and Art Display.” Indonesian cultural fair with food and art displays, presentation on the unique culture and traditional of the Indonesian islands and traditional Indonesian dishes served in a potluck dinner setting. “Celebrating Cultural Diversity of the Slutzker Center.” Learn about the operations of the Slutzker Center and the cultural diversity of its staff. Staff will display crafts and clothing reflective of their cultural backgrounds. Tours available every hour from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. The Slutzker Center.

“JET Programme Presentation: Interested in Teaching English in Japan?” Introduction to the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET). Presentation by former program participants, followed by a question and answer session. Sponsored by the Slutzker Center. The Slutzker Center, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

“Film: ‘Amor, Mujeres y Flores.” Documentary film about the life of female workers in Columbia, particularly in the flower plantations around the capital city Bogota. The Slutzker Center, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 18

“International Perspective on the American Election Process and Presidential Race.” Panel discussion with international students and scholars from around the world on the U.S. political system and differences in election processes in various countries. The Slutzker Center, 1:00-2:00 p.m.

“Work and Research Abroad.” Lecture by Dr. Maryann Keenan. Keenan teaches cultural ecology at State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. She will address work and research abroad. Sponsored by the Multicultural Student Advisory Board. Moon Library Conference Room, ESF; 2:00-3:00 p.m.

“What is Francophonie?” Potluck dinner that includes traditional Francophone dishes and desserts. The evening also features the French Canadian film, “La Grande Seduction,” with English subtitles. Sponsored by Club Francophonie. The Slutzker Center, 5:30-7:00 p.m.

“25th Annual International Thanksgiving Celebration.” More than 500 international students, scholars and their families are expected to attend the invitation-only dinner designed to introduce newly arrived international students and scholars to the American Thanksgiving tradition.
