SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Recently released statistics from the Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) were cited in Newsday (registration required), Orange County Register and Wall Street Journal articles about the deportation of illegal immigrants under the Obama administration.

The Maxwell School and S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications are noted as partnering schools with the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists in a United News of India story about Amit Patro, editor of the English daily “Sikkim Express,” participating in the U.S. Department of State’s specialized International Visitor Leadership Program planned for fall 2010.

Life.com reported on the coalition launch of the Strengthen Social Security Campaign during a news conference at the National Press Club July 29, calling on Congress not to cut Social Security benefits as the retirement/disability program nears its 75th anniversary. Eric Kingson, professor of social work in the College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work and co-chair of the campaign, participated in the news conference. An AFL-CIO blog entry also reported on the campaign’s launch.

Indian Country Today reported on Robert Odawi Porter, professor of law in the College of Law, running for the Seneca Nation of Indians presidency.

William Pollard, College of Human Ecology dean of social work emeritus, is featured in a New York Times story about his first year as president of Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College in the City University of New York.

FACULTY QUOTES

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the College of Human Ecology, co-authored an opinion piece in the SportsBusiness Journal (subscription required) about star athletes transitioning to legendary icon status and resulting effects on the athletes’ sponsors.

An “On Faith” commentary by Gustav Niebuhr, associate professor of religion and media in the College of Arts and Sciences and Newhouse School, appeared in the Washington Post discussing the focus of media reporting in the Shirley Sherrod case.

Harriet Brown, assistant professor of magazine journalism at the Newhouse School, inaugurated a new blog, “Brave Girl Eating,” in Psychology Today with a posting on families learning about anorexia.

Maximo Patino, director of recruitment and diversity at the Newhouse School, is quoted in a New York magazine story about Essence magazine’s appointment of its first white fashion director, Ellianna Placas.

Tony Callisto, chief and director of the SU Department of Public Safety, and Emilie Davis, adjunct professor of newspaper and online journalism in the Newhouse School, were quoted in a WSYR-TV follow-up report on Monday’s mock disaster and training exercise on the SU campus covered by Newhouse graduate students.
