Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
Today, the federal government announced that the Department of Defense will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military. This decision is inconsistent with Syracuse University’s values of access, and of inclusion, as well as of support for veterans.
Our University has, for more than a century, been dedicated to working closely with veterans and military-connected students and families. We are proud to have earned consistently high rankings and praise from military officials for those efforts, as well as from advocates for diversity and inclusion.
I have worked closely with transgender students, staff, and faculty at Syracuse. It is offensive to me that anyone would question the patriotism or competence of the transgender members of our community to contribute to our national defense. Syracuse University will always be a place that welcomes people of all identities, including within our programs for veterans and military-connected families.
