Following is the latest information, as of midday Thursday, Sept. 20, from Syracuse University of campus activities in response to Sept. 11’s terrorism in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

A reminder: Those interested in joining the march from the Quad to Clinton Square today should gather at Hendricks Chapel at about 5:15 p.m. Dean Thomas V. Wolfe, Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw, SUNY Upstate Medical University President Gregory L. Eastwood and SUNY ESF President Cornelius B. Murphy Jr. will give brief remarks. They will then lead march participants down Crouse Drive and South Crouse Avenue to East Water Street and on to Clinton Square. Departure from the Quad will be promptly at 5:30 p.m. to allow enough time to walk to Clinton Square and get situated. A very large crowd is expected to attend.

The Clinton Square event, “We Stand Together: A Gathering of Hope and Healing,” will begin at 7 p.m. and last 60 to 90 minutes. Marchers are invited to bring candles or flashlights. Umbrellas are also recommended just in case. Afterward, those who are interested in returning to the Hill together should meet at the fountain in Hanover Square (adjacent to Clinton Square).

Another reminder: Another event related to the Sept. 11 terrorist acts will take place on campus tonight. A teach-in about potential U.S. military actions in Afghanistan will be held in Grant Auditorium at 7 p.m.

The Syracuse University Army and Air Force ROTC programs will sponsor a candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, on the steps of Hendricks Chapel to honor America’s POWs and MIAs. The ceremony will begin with the lowering of the black POW-MIA flag by a color guard of cadets; a reading of POW-MIA stories will follow. The event will conclude with a speech by Air Force ROTC Commander Col. Mark Perodeau, who has spent time supporting the search for POW remains in Southeast Asia.

“It’s unfortunate it has to be under these circumstances,” says Cadet Dave Gaulin, referring to the tragedies of Sept. 11, “but I really think we’ll see a lot of people holding candles Friday.” POW-MIA Day is a national day of remembrance which is observed every year on the third Friday in September.

All members of the Alibrandi Community are invited to the Alibrandi Center Friday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. for a “Rosary for Peace & Understanding.” Participants will join together to try to make sense of what happened on Sept. 11, to heal, and to get back to some semblance of “normal.”

A reminder: Those attending this Saturday’s SU/Auburn football game in the Carrier Dome are asked to arrive early. Gates open at 6 p.m.; fans should be in their seats by 7:30 p.m. More than 150 student-athletes will be around the Dome and parking areas for Dollar Day at the Dome, collecting donations for the September 11^th Fund of the United Way of America. Attendees should also allot time for extra security checks at the Dome gates. Once inside, fans will find at each seat a miniature American flag for a special pre-game ceremony that will include a moment of silence and the Pride of the Orange Marching Band leading the crowd in “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” The pre-game ceremony and the game itself will be broadcast nationwide on ESPN.
