WCNY to present ‘Holidays at Hendricks’ on television, radio and Internet Dec. 24 and 25December 08, 2008Kelly Homan Rodoskikahoman@syr.edu

“Holidays at Hendricks,” the annual holiday concert featuring the Hendricks Chapel Choir and the Syracuse University Brass Ensemble (SUBE), will be aired on television and radio and streamed on the Internet on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day through a unique collaboration between Syracuse University and WCNY.

The concert was held on Dec. 7 in Hendricks Chapel. Broadcast times for Dec. 24 are 6 p.m. on the radio and Internet, and 9 p.m. on television. Broadcast times for Dec. 25 are 8 a.m. on the radio and Internet, and 2 p.m. on television.

WCNY-FM (CLASSIC-FM) is found at 91.3 in Syracuse, 89.5 in Utica and 90.9 in Watertown. Internet streams can be found on the Web at http://www.wcny.org. WCNY-TV is found on Channel 24 or Time Warner Cable Channel 11.

During the 90-minute concert, the two groups perform both individually and in combination. The choir is directed by John Warren and the brass ensemble by James Spencer. University Organist Kola Owolabi provides accompaniment. This year’s program includes music by Brahms, Bruckner, Handel, Victoria and contemporary American Morten Lauridsen, as well as traditional carols.

For more information on the “Holidays at Hendricks” concert-including the full program, audio excerpts and the list of performers-visit http://hendricks.syr.edu/holidayconcert/.

The Hendricks Chapel Choir is a select, voice-mixed choir of about 40 students that provides music for the Sunday morning interdenominational Protestant service at SU, as well as for various campus events. The choir presents annual holiday and spring concerts, and tours internationally every four years. The choir will tour South America in May 2009.

The Syracuse University Brass Ensemble, housed in SU’s College of Arts and Sciences, is composed of members of the SU faculty and staff, the SUNY Upstate Medical University faculty and staff, and accomplished musicians from surrounding communities. The SUBE presents about 18 performances per year, including the annual Fourth of July celebration with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra at the New York State Fairgrounds. The ensemble’s repertoire includes music from all major musical periods and often features new compositions commissioned by nationally known composers.
