Chimes, the annual journal of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at Syracuse University, has won two national awards in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s (CASE) 2008 Circle of Excellence Awards Program. The journal’s 2007 issue won a gold award for visual design in print and a bronze award in the individual institutional publications category.

Chimes debuted as a redesigned annual journal in fall 2007. The publication is distributed to CVPA alumni, friends, donors, parents of current undergraduate students, prospective students, faculty and staff members. Chimes is edited by Erica Blust, director of communications in CVPA, and designed by Roderick Martinez, associate professor of communications design in CVPA’s School of Art and Design. Jaime Winne Alvarez, news manager in SU News Services, serves as the journal’s contributing writer.

Photographers whose work appeared in the 2007 issue of Chimes include William Padgett, associate professor of communications design in the School of Art and Design; CVPA alumnus Jason Pearson G’07, who majored in art photography in CVPA’s Department of Transmedia; University photographer Steve Sartori; and current CVPA graduate student Colin Todd G’09, who is majoring in art photography in the Department of Transmedia.

CASE’s Circle of Excellence Awards Program recognizes outstanding work in communications and marketing, alumni relations, advancement services and fundraising as judged by peer professionals at schools, colleges and universities as well as by professionals from outside education. The program is open to professionals working at member colleges, universities, independent schools and educational associates around the world.

In 2008, CASE received more than 3,500 entries for consideration in 41 categories covering the areas of alumni relations programs, fundraising programs, institutional relations, new media, advancement services, institutional marketing, periodicals and publications and design. Judges awarded 363 bronze, silver and gold awards. Fifteen institutions received the top prize of a grand gold award. Winners were selected based on a number of factors, including overall quality, innovation, use of resources and the impact on the institution or its external and internal communities such as alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff.

CVPA is the creative center of Syracuse University. The college is comprised of five areas: the School of Art and Design; the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies; the Department of Drama; the Setnor School of Music; and the Department of Transmedia. Together, students, faculty and staff play a vital role in the academic and cultural life of the University and Syracuse communities. To learn more about the college, visit http://vpa.syr.edu.
