C-SPAN to broadcast Newhouse III keynote address by Chief Justice Roberts Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. ETOctober 17, 2007Jaime Winne Alvarezjlwinne@syr.edu

Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., visited the Syracuse University campus on Sept. 19 to dedicate Newhouse III, the third building of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. This Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. ET, C-SPAN will broadcast the chief justice’s dedication keynote address on the First Amendment on its “America and the Courts” program. The address took place in SU’s Hendricks Chapel.

The visit by Chief Justice Roberts continued a tradition of historic visits to the Newhouse School, including the 1964 visit by President Lyndon B. Johnson to dedicate Newhouse I and the 1974 visit by CBS Chairman of the Board William S. Paley to dedicate Newhouse II.

Newhouse III, a $31.6 million, 74,000-square-foot addition to the Newhouse Communications Complex, was funded by a lead gift of $15 million — one of the largest private donations in SU history — by the S.I. Newhouse Foundation and the Newhouse family, and by donations from alumni and friends of the school. Designed by New York City-based Polshek Partnership Architects, the building supports and continues the Newhouse School’s status as one of the top schools of communication in the nation. The project was recently honored by New York Construction magazine as the best higher education construction project in the tri-state area for 2007.
